What is Viral Marketing?
From the initial sound of it, most people may immediately think of some kind of disease or infection. But Viral Marketing has become a new phenomenon that most may equate to the Marketing Strategy of the Barack Obama Campaign. With a well thought out approach, Obama has gracefully swept the election as the favorite due to his Viral Marketing Strategies.
Considering that we are in the “Information Age” era, it is no secret that Technology Rules. Companies have been forced to reconsider the way they do business to avoid closing their doors. From restaurants, hair salons, grocery stories and simple daily necesities, the internet has been the directory of choice to locate local businesses. It has been said that “If you don’t have your business on the internet, then your not in business!”.
Viral Marketing is the Internet version of Word of Mouth Marketing. But instead of individuals telling each other face to face, a message is passed along and forwarded to a large number of recepients as the message snowballs and quickly becomes widespread to a very large audience.
You may have been acquainted with Viral Marketing with certain YouTube Videos that were extremely humurous and promoted an average joe blow to become an Internet Celebrity. Or your inbox may get flooded daily with inspirational messages that were forwarded to tons of other people. These are simple examples of how you’ve been impacted by Viral Marketing on a daily basis.
Although Viral Marketing has become common, there are still very few companies and business owners that have actually implemented it’s practices. If your a business owner, you may want to pass on the “casual use” and implent a more business driven focus. The objective of Viral Marketing is to “Market”. If you have a product or service to provide, you will want to create messages with a purpose, that will also promote your product. BUT your message must be attractive enough to receive the endorsements of others that are willing to promote what your offering, to their friends.
In order to do this, you can not release boring and empty content that overbearingly promotes your business without providing value to your target audience. Instead, you want to get creative and find a common problem that you see amongst your audience and provide a Viral Marketing message as the solution. It is only then that you will have the “viral effect”. Otherwise, you’ll have messages that is of no interest to anyone and just takes up empty real estate on the internet without any visitors.
Please note, Viral Marketing isn’t spamming people agressively. It is a strategic way to do business that generates leads, creates a following of interested clients and provides relevant information to a specific group of people that are looking for your product.
